Influence of hemicelluloses on the aggregation patterns of bacterial cellulose

Cellulose from the bacteriumAcetobacter xylinum was used as a model system for investigating the influence of other cell wall polysaccharides on the aggregation of cellulose. The patterns of aggregation of the bacterial cellulose were modified when the cellulose was produced in the presence of hemicellulose-like saccharides. The celluloses were found to be more like the I-type found in higher plant celluloses than the I-type in the control bacterial celluloses. The effects of isolation procedures on structure were also explored. It was found that the structures of isolated celluloses were influenced by the procedures used in isolation.Formerly The Institute of Paper Chemistry, Appleton, WI, USA.Retired     

Highly diastereoselective oxidation of 2-amino-2-deoxy-1-thio-beta-D-glucopyranosides: synthesis of imino sulfinylglycosides

A synthetic route to imino thioglycosides and to imino sulfinylglycosides has been developed. A detailed study on the diastereoselective oxidation of 2-amino-2-deoxy-1-thio-beta-D-glucopyranosides is reported. It has been shown that the stereochemical outcome of the oxidation is highly dependent on the protective group of the amine function. While the oxidation of iminothioglycosides is slightly diastereoselective (up to 30% de in favor of the R(S) sulfoxide), a single isomer is obtained in the case of tetrachlorophthalimido derivatives. The absolute configuration of the sulfinyl glycoside was ascertained by NMR analysis using our recent model on the basis of the exo-anomeric effect corroborated by X-ray crystallography.     

The isopropylsulfinyl group: a useful chiral controller for the asymmetric aziridination of sulfinylimines and the organocatalytic allylation of hydrazones

[reaction: see text] A comparative study shows that the isopropylsulfinyl group for which an enantiodivergent and highly diastereoselective approach is reported behaves better than the tert-butylsulfinyl and p-tolylsulfinyl groups, both in terms of reactivity and stereoselectivity in the Corey-Chaykovsky reaction of chiral sulfinylimines and the organocatalytic allylation of acyl hydrazones.     

Radiochemical separation of thorium by isotope ion exchange

The aim of the present work is to obtain the separation of²³³Th from the radioisotopes formed in the irradiation of Mn, U, Ba, Cs, Co and the lanthanide elements with thermal neutrons, because they may interfere in the neutron activation analysis of Th, when the activity of²³³Th is used. The experiments were performed with the resin Bio-Rad AG 50W X-4 and X-8 (100–200 mesh) in the thorium form. The separation of²³³Th from the interfering radioisotopes is based on the retention of²³³Th by the resin (isotope exchange) and the elution of the interfering radioisotopes with a dilute solution of Th in 0.5M HCl. Batch experiments were made in order to determine the equilibrium time for the isotopic ion exchange of thorium and also the distribution coefficients of the interfering elements between the solution and the resin. Column experiments were carried out with the purpose of establishing the conditions that allow the maximum isotope exchange of²³³Th and the minimum retention of the interfering radioisotopes in the resin. With this purpose, a statistical interpretation of a four variable experimental design is presented.From a thesis submitted by C. Base-catalyzed inversion of chiral sulfur centers. A computational study

[reaction: see text] A theoretical study on the pyramidal inversion of the chiral sulfur compounds SO(X)(Me) (X = Cl, OMe, p-MePh) has been carried out by means of the DFT(Becke3LYP) method. Our results reveal that in the case of X = Cl, an organic tertiary amine such as NMe(3) can catalyze the racemization. The base-catalyzed inversion of SO(Cl)(Me) is proposed as a feasible dynamic kinetic resolution mechanism for the synthesis of chiral sulfoxides by the DAG method.

The flow around the unshrouded marine propellers operating in the wake of an axisymmetric body is rotational and tridimensional. An inverse method based on the model of inviscid and rotational fluid and coupling two complementary steps (axisymmetric computation + 3D panel method) is proposed for the design of the marine propellers. The meridional flow computation leads to the determination of axisymmetrical stream sheets as well as the approximate camber surface of the blades and gives a good estimation of the surface of the free vortex wake. The new aspects developed in this method are the involvement of the contraction and the stretching of the free vortex wake, the rotational character of the incoming flow in the axisymmetric computation with tridimensional effects due to 3D panel method.
